The Pocono Community Theater in East Stroudsburg, PA held two Artists’ Receptions on Saturday August 14th in their new front and hallway galleries. The event featured the works of Jan Selving in an exhibit titled, "Torn and Frayed” and Richard Spezzano in an exhibit titled, "Color My World." A sizable gathering attended the reception which enhanced the enjoyable conversation, art, and culinary treats that were very satisfying.
Ms. Selving’s work consisted of colorful pieces of paper pasted together to create some interesting looking animals and other objects framed in such a way that it gave each image a third dimensional quality. This quality enhanced the seemingly simplistic approach she takes to her subjects adding a certain depth drawing the viewer deeper into the work as they take special note of the shadows they cast. Her work can be seen throughout the front lobby of the theater.
Mr. Spezzano’s photographic work illuminated the eye with their vibrant colors depicting the familiar scenes from the Pocono Area and beyond in such a way the viewer finds him/herself visiting it for the very first time. In fact, many of the images in the pieces were arranged in such a way they didn’t merely represent the objects and their locations, but transcended them through their unconventional placement within the frame. This allowed one to see what they always see in a new way. His work can be seen along the walls leading to the second and third screening rooms The Pocono Community Theater offers its patrons.
The Exhibitions continue until September 26th and both are well worth taking some time to explore while awaiting the start of a film. Each contrasted nicely with the other in regards to their artistic approach and subject matter.
