Music Creates a Haunting House Concert

The ArtMusic Coffeehouse in East Stroudsburg, PA presented Seattle singer/songwriter/singer Anna Coogan on Friday October 22nd. After a performance of soothing meditative music given by host Don Slepian, Ms. Coogan and her guitar took the stage to mesmerize the audience further with her powerfully haunting voice. A painting created by her cousin Ali Walsh provided a visional backdrop providing some additional depth to the performance as it was utilized for the cover art of her most recent CD titled (as is the piece), “The Nocturnal Among Us.”

Although the majority of the songs sung by Ms. Coogan were her own compositions, she did perform some songs written by other artists. However, her interpretation of these songs took the listener beyond the outstanding qualities of the original performance and allowing them to experience a new higher level as they found new meanings to the older melodies. A thoughtful silence covered the audience like a blanket as they thoughtfully absorbed the entirety of Ms. Coogan’s musical stylings.

Along with the wonderful music, the evening also included an opportunity to enjoy some delightful conversation and some delicious culinary treats which included some tempting chocolate donuts. A peaceful and welcoming environment never fails to engulf those who come visit the house which many has come to feel at home. Going Forward at ESU

The East Stroudsburg University of PA held an Artist’s Reception in their Madelon Powers Gallery on Thursday October 14th which featured the work of Joni Oye-Benintende. A sizable crowd came together to experience the exhibition titled, “Going Forward in Reverse” in spite of the wet, dreary weather that dominated the day. The Reception was well worth the endeavor to brave the elements for as each piece presented its unique beauty and depth for each attendee to explore.

According to the program provided to the Gallery’s visitors, the exhibit derived from the artist’s inspiration to go back to the work she had previously explored with much of it left incomplete. In her endeavors to revise and manifest the ideas of her past efforts, Ms. Oye-Benintende created a bridge connecting the past to the present which may yet lead to a future vision created through the perceptions of those who experiences the work. One could have seen this in the thoughtful gazes of those who attended the reception as a silent countenance communicated a great deal more than the conversations about what they felt about the shapes and designs was able to convey.

The Exhibition Continues until November 24th. You’ll find more photographs taken during the reception in The Forwardian Arts Society Visual Arts 2010 Gallery at www.myspace.com/forwardian_arts. The next Exhibition at The Madelon Powers Gallery will be the University’s Semester Review to be presented November 29th until December 10th featuring the work of students enrolled the in the Fall Semester Art Classes. Living and Dieing at Dreamland (and other Adventures)

The Dreamland Creations in Stroudsburg, PA held an Artists Reception on Sunday October 3rd featuring the work of numerous artists for their exhibition titled, “The Life and Death Show.” As with all their themed shows, Dreamland Creations encouraged artists to devise their own interpretation to what the concepts of life and death really mean and how they relate to the ordinary and extraordinary modes of existence. This led to a wide variety of styles and subjects presented in various mediums ranging from morbid and grotesque depictions to romantic explorations.

Although the work and approach to this month’s theme was delightfully overwhelming with its variety, there was some commonality in the perceptional understanding of the nature of life and death. This understanding seemed to forego the western religious view that death is the end of life and embraced the eastern view that death is a part of life. This later approach often quells the fears of a physical passing the former instigates although dieing is still the last thing anyone would want to do.

The reception concluded with a performance by Rezlep and The Apparatus whose “Trip-hop Cabaret” stylings which combines vocal and musical soundtracks from numerous sources along with original material delighted all who partook of the world that was created. This world contained countries full of bizarre and macabre denizens along with some friends from Fraggle Rock. It was a fun adventure and a great way to end the time visiting the Gallery along with all the friends who frequent there. You’ll find more photographs taken during the reception in The Forwardian Arts Society Dreamland Creations 2010 Gallery.

Those artists participating in “The Life and Death Show” include M. J. McCauley, Rendi, Helen Victoria, Rob VanNess, J. J. Shlutz, Don Menza, Shane Izykowski, Sherley Escribano, Abby Braman, Hayley Lushinsky, Mark Purcell, Judy Zarach, Tim Nebel, Jamie Ratchford, Allison Gray, Kari, Michael Cooke, Ashley Ratchford, Michael Parsons, Denise and Bob VanNess, Marcia Flammonde, Elizabeth Streczyk, Brianna Ace, Ashley Mytyk, John Kobeck, Ben May, Gallows, Jason Porter, and Myke Maldonado. The Exhibition continues until October 31st.

Prior to the Artists’ Reception at Dreamland Creations, I strolled around the town of Stroudsburg, PA and walked into The Main Street Jukebox who held an Artist Reception on the previous night but I was feeling a bit under the weather and decided not to attend. Imagine my delight to find the artist featuring in the exhibition there showing friends and family who also couldn’t make the reception. It was fortunate to have the opportunity to talk to the artist and to explore the intricacies of her work which consisted mostly of portraits of famous rock musicians who have become iconic.

The Rebecca Crockett Exhibition continues until October 24th and you’ll find more photographs at The Forwardian Arts Society Main Street Jukebox 2010 Gallery at www.myspace.com/forwardian_arts. After I left The Main Street Jukebox, I went over to The Cheeky Monkey Coffeehouse to facilitate The Forwardian Arts Society Visual Arts Gathering. It is the last such Gathering for the 2010 Season and it was a pleasure to meet with Artist Diane Furry Paulhamus as I was given the wonderful opportunity to view cards depicting her work while listening her tell me how they came into being and what inspired her to create them. It was a wonderful way to spend the hour until “The Life and Death Show” Reception arrived. The Next Visual Art Lovers Gathering is scheduled to take place sometime during the month of April in 2011.

Zardoz at The Monkey

The Forwardian Arts Society held their monthly Film Lovers’ Gathering on Friday October 1st to see the 1974 film “Zardoz.” The gathering was a new experience as it was the first to meet at their new venue at The Cheeky Monkey Coffeehouse in Stroudsburg, PA. The screening and the subsequent conversation about the film that followed was enhanced by the comfortable atmosphere of this new venue.

“Zardoz” is a personal favorite of mine and that is why I chose it for the first film to be shown in our new venue. In 1974, my father signed up for a new service for our television set that recently began broadcasting. It was called, “Home Box Office (HBO)” and it featured first run film uncut and unedited. The first film I saw was “Zardoz” and, as a 14 year old boy, I became entranced by the amount of nudity it presented. Even though this fascination with the female form stabilized after first hand experiences of it, the film still held my interests through its deeper philosophical implications on social and spiritual issues.

The film is about two societies existing in the year 2293. One is referred to “The Brutals” who are mortal and live their lives throughout a post apocalyptic world and “The Eternals” who are immortal and live their carefree lives in great elegance inside their dwelling called “The Vortex.” One of the eternals create a god named “Zardoz” who breeds some of the Brutals to exterminate other Brutals. One of these exterminators named “Zed” (portrayed by Sean Connery) penetrates the Vortex and brings a much yearned for end to the eternals’ immortality.

The conversation following the screening explored many aspects of the film. While some remarked on the beauty of it’s imagery, others speculated on what types of hallucinogens the film maker was on during its creation. There were also some discussion on the religious and social overtones of the film as well.

Such discussion noted in a world filled with death a savior coming into it may promise eternal life but a world in which there is already eternal life a savior may offer death for its redemption. Thus the former helps the world by encouraging its inhabitants to focus on things beyond their present reality (ie “Be in the world but not of it”) while the later brings more meaning to the life we live by placing a time limit on what we do. In other words, we should do what is good for ourselves and others and tell those we love that we love them now because there may be no later.

The Forwardian Arts Society is a fellowship for people who love the arts seeking to enhance the creative community by encouraging those interested in the arts to go forward toward their dreams, by supporting those groups and individuals who are manifesting their dreams through performances and/or presentations, and by loving them and all they do. Their next Film Lovers Gathering is scheduled to take place on Friday November 5th at 7pm at The Cheeky Monkey Coffeehouse in Stroudsburg, PA. The film shown will be one selected by ballot and its screening is free to the public. Please feel free to contact The Forwardian Arts Society to learn how you can participate4 in the selection process.

The Cheeky Monkey Coffeehouse offers a free crepe with the purchase of a beverage to attendees while they’re watching the film. Also, those who wish to enjoy a small meal and fellowship prior to the screening are welcomed to come around 6pm to do so. There are many culinary treats on their menu available for purchase.
