Theatrical Review: Cabaret

CABARET
Book by: Joe Masteroff
Based upon John Van Drutten’s Play “I Am A Camera”
Lyrics by: Fred Ebb
Music by: John Kander
Directed by: Dr. Margaret Ball
Theatrical Review by: Paul Adam Smeltz

The Sherman Theatre* in Stroudsburg, PA presented The Pocono Lively Arts* production of “Cabaret” by Joe Masteroff which was based upon John Van Drutten’s Play “I Am A Camera” with Lyrics by Fred Ebb and Music by John Kander. The play, “Cabaret,” takes place in Germany just prior to the rise of Nazism in which the economic desperation and social upheavals were remedied by entertainment venues found in cabarets throughout the country. These cabarets presented the issues of the day to their audiences in humorous and often bawdy ways which (as most comedy does) allowed them to relieve the pressures of living their lives by laughing at the horrors they encountered.

The Pocono Lively Arts* production of “Cabaret” welcomes its audience into the world and lives of those living in pre war Germany and to experience their joys and sorrows while reflect upon how their lives and times are similar to ours. The play offers itself as a haven from our fears and worries from the storm clouds we sense lurking over the horizon of our dreams. We learn that, although laughing at our forebodings can help us to cope with the fears they bring, actions need to be taken to keep those who would diminish our freedoms and rights to self determination us at bay. History has often shown Democracies seldom end with the sound of gunfire but with the thundering applause a dictator inspires.

As mentioned in previous reviews, The Pocono Lively Arts* often presents theatrical productions which shy away from controversial issues and designed to please as many audience members as possible. It is very rare to see a Pocono Lively Arts* production with the depth a play like “Cabaret” contains. This reviewer has seen one attempt and it was demonstrated how difficult it is to change a people pleasing approach of theatrical presentation to a more meaningful one. However, this production of “Cabaret” has more than proven it can be done.

The Pocono Lively Arts* has involved a large number of faculty and students from East Stroudsburg University (ESU)* in the production. ESU has gained a well deserved reputation of presenting theatrical works not commercially viable due to their subject matter. In other words, plays which might offend certain sensibilities and don’t draw large audiences can be found on the ESU Stage. This has allowed ESU to present works designed to challenge and enhance their audiences’ perceptions of their world through their theatrical experiences. This experience in theatre proved to be the perfect shot in the arm The Pocono Lively Arts* needed to make “Cabaret” the quality production it deserves to be.

The cast of Cabaret” included Grant Snuffer* as the Emcee who omniscient presence not only relays to us the deeper meaning of the musical numbers but that of the lives presented to his audience, Kathi Spigelmyer as Sally Bowles the singer of the cabaret called, “The Kit Kat Klub“ who is able to look at the hard cold reality of life as long as they don‘t interfere with her dreams, Justin O‘Neal Rosario* as Clifford Bradshaw whose innocent approach to life seems inappropriate to the situations he encounters until he realizes their true natures, Jane Asher as Fraulein Schneider a survivor who finds she must forego her heart’s desire to continue surviving in an uncertain future, Richard Cox as Herr Schultz who becomes a tragic figure because he does not know what will become of him in the new order of things but we do, A. J. Snapp as Ernst Ludwig whose seductive manners and aura of success entices others while hiding a darker side of his nature shared by those who will soon engulf a nation touched by its hypnotic propagandas, Molly Brunkard* as Fraulein Kost the prostitute who has learned how to utilize her charms to survive the difficult times she lives.

Rounding out the main cast were a number of actors whose talents enhanced the production. The included, Spencer Taylor and Gregory Palencer as Bobby and Victor two patrons of “The Kit Kat Klub,” Michael Demyan as both the Sailor (a customer/cousin/brother etc of Fraulein Kost) and Taxi Driver, Angelo Revilla III* as the Customs Officer, Robert Morgan as Max the “Kit Kat klub” owner, and Dr. Peter Pruim as Hans-Dieter. “The Kit Kat Klub” ensemble consisted of Dana Bartolomeo as Lola, Michele Buzzelli* as Estella, Rachel Cohen as Gisele, Alexandra Dickison as Cecile, and Jenell Manzi as Inge, Stephanie Reyes as Tabitha along with Lauren Santarelli as Ilse and Shelly Snapp who served the production as Dance Captains.

Musicians for the production consisted of “The Beautiful Orchestra” led by the Musical Director Dr. Betsy Buzzelli-Clark* on piano (who also served as Rehearsal Accompanist), Clarissa A. Gallo on Bass, Marta Overlin and Dot Cacchio on Reeds, Lizzy Donovan on Trumpet, Tim Eick and Robert Bottger on Trumpets, Bill Keller on Trombone, Marta Oberlin, Larry Gordon, and Dot Cacckhio on Reeds, Kathryn Vallilee on Trombone, and Adam Benefield* on percussion. Rehearsal Accompanist included Jenny Collins and Pauline Fox.

“Cabaret” by Joe Masteroff with Lyrics by Fred Ebb and Music by John Kander was Directed by Dr. Margaret Ball while Mary Ellen Van Camp served as Stage Manager with Kim Van Camp as the Assistant Stage Manager. The Rehearsal Stage Manager was Amber Swiatocha. Jeanna Maldonado served as the production’s Choreographer. The Set Designer and Builder was Michael Eyth while the Sound Designer was Glenn Kern with Michael Pierson as the Lighting Designer. The Production was ushered by Volunteers of The Pocono Lively Arts* and The Sherman Theatre*.

This production of “Cabaret” proved to be wonderful and meaningful theatrical experience. It is recommended to those seeking a breath of fresh air in theatrical presentations from The Pocono Lively Arts*. Unfortunately, like all Pocono Lively Arts* Productions, the run of the show is brief. In fact, it’s run from June 27th - 29th is over. The next Pocono Lively Arts* production will be “a shorter and more suitable” version of “Grease” to be performed July 25th - 27th at The Sherman Theatre* in Stroudsburg, PA. Please contact The Sherman Theatre* at 570-420-2808 or visit their website for more information and to reserve your ticket. Theatrical Review: FAME: The Musical

FAME: THE MUSICAL
Conceived and Developed by David De Silva
Book by Jose Fernandez
Music by Steve Margoshes (with additional music by Mark Berman)
Lyrics by Jacques Levy.
Directed by: Jon Baptiste
Theatrical Review by: Paul Adam Smeltz

The Shawnee Playhouse* in Shawnee on the Delaware, PA presented their production of “FAME: The Musical” which was Conceived and Developed by David De Silva. The play was inspired by the film and television series, “FAME” and features an ensemble cast consisting of the students who attended the school presented in the film and series after it achieved its fame.

A new cast of student characters arrive at the school with similar traits of their predecessors but each contains enough individuality to enable their personalities (and the play itself) to stand alone to embrace their own experiences with unique integrity. The students are met by teachers who dedicated their lives to sharing their knowledge of life and the arts prior to the release of the film and television series and will remain to do so long after they’re forgotten. “FAME: The Musical” allows its audience to reflect fondly on both the film and television series without experiencing the pitfall of a production’s reliance on the previous forms which often leads the audience to make unfair comparisons of the present and earlier cast members.

The play is a delight to watch with its high energy dance performances coinciding with a realistic depth found in the interaction between characters. The songs were also pleasant as the moved the story forward and allowed more elements of the character to be exposed to the audience. The acting was of a high quality except for some instances when some actors seemed to drop their character when they blended into the background and became part of the ensemble performing the musical numbers. There were also the usual Opening Night jitters and some technical glitches in the performance I attended, but such defects are often diminished as subsequent performances provides the cast with an energy from the audience transcending that found in rehearsals.

The ensemble cast of students consisted of Caitlin Boyle as Serena whose initial shyness makes her desire to become an actress a daunting adventure but her explorations of love makes her heroic, Evie Korovecsis* (who also served as Costuming Assistant) as (on Opening Night) Lambchops (which is also played by Molly Gallagher) the drummer of a student created band whose wise words often leads the rhythm of its other members, David B. Johnson as Nick the child star of commercials who desires to pursue his talents and to be taken seriously as an actor, Rachel Hettinger* as Iris the perceived child of a well to do and cultured life who is discovered to be as ordinary as anyone else, Brian Krinsky (who also served as Props Master) as Goody the trumpeter of the student created band whose often sour notes heralds in a new understanding of the situations his classmates encounter, Ashley Nieves (who also served as Props Mistress) as Mabel the dance student who learns more about herself as her studies in the art takes her to new ground, Zack Powell as Joe Vegas the cocky actor whose exhibitionist antics serves as comic relief not only to his classmates but the audience as well, Eileen Schmitt as Carmen whose high creative and sexual energies are discovered to have a a dark and self destructive source, Leo Christopher Sheridan as Tyrone whose talent and self assuredness seems to overshadow his lack of academic abilities until a light illuminates a hope for a brighter future filled with the ability to understand more than who he presently is, and Andrew Young as Schlomo who seeks to overcome his musical legacies by establishing one of his own while discovering love and the sense of lost it sometimes accompanies.

The ensemble cast of the Faculty consisted of Edward Joseph as Mr. Myers the theatrical teacher whose deeper understanding of his students allows them to see themselves with new eyes, Scott E. McIntosh as Mr. Sheinkopf whose slightly jaded approach to musical education allows his students to base their talents in reality, Pittershawn Palmer* as Mrs. Bell whose love for the form of dance inspires her students as they inspire her to live her dreams through their talents which sometimes causes her to lose sight of their academic needs, and Adia William as Miss. Sherman (not Mrs. Boyles as depicted in the program) whose desire for the students to have an educational background if their dreams fail to provide for them financially sometimes causes her to lose sight of their creative needs.

The ensemble cast of students who rounded out the company with their talents in the form of dance and song were Jessica Brooks, Kevin Dwyer*, Chani Forde, Megan Griffith, Peter Korovesis, Kyle Mahoney, Scotland Newton*, Dominique Perez, Travis Southard*, and Carrie Strunk. While these actors and actresses had few lines and were not an intricate part of the production as their cast members, they served the production well with their imperative skills which enhanced the show and would had made it a very dull evening if they were not there.

“FAME: The Musical” which was Conceived and Developed by David De Silva was Directed by Jon Baptiste and Choreographed by Christine O’ Brian-Mase while Ben Krauss served as Music Director. The Stage Manager was Rob DelColle and the Assistant Stage Manager was Tucker Haworth. The Technical Director and Lighting Designer was Jessica Sentack with Jenavene Hester. The Set Designer was Sean Warner while the Costumers were Jane Summer and Kathy Staneski. The Executive Director of The Shawnee Playhouse* is Midge McClosky* while the producers are Ginny and Charlie Kirkwood. Group Sales of their productions are handled by Mary horn while The Shawnee Playhouse publicity is handled by Amy Cramer*.

This production of “FAME: The Musical” which was Conceived and Developed by David De Silva will continue its run at The Shawnee Playhouse* in Shawnee on the Delaware, PA until August 9th and is recommended for those who would like to enjoy a wonderful and exhilarating night at the theatre. The next Shawnee Playhouse* in Shawnee on the Delaware, PA presentations will be their Children Theatre production of “Peter Pan” to be performed July 5th - August 23rd, “The Dining Room” to be performed Jully 11th - August 3rd, and “Nunsense” to be performed July 19th -.August 31st. Those who enjoy the Passionate Art Lover level of membership in The Forwardian Arts Society are offered a $2.00 discount off the admission fee of The Shawnee Playhouse* Productions (excluding Children Theatrical Production). Shawnee Pays Tribute to Sinatra

The Shawnee Playhouse* in Shawnee on the Delaware, PA presented their revue entitled, “My Way: A tribute to Frank Sinatra.” This entertaining presentation was fill with numerous favorites along with (as noted by one of the performers) unfamiliar tunes whose powers of enchantment weren’t diminished by their lack of notoriety. While Sinatra often stated the key to his success was to “Sing Good Songs,” he also had a certain way of styling the songs he performed. Instead of mimicking Sinatra’s style and thereby cheapening the presentation, each performer discovered a delicate balance in which they paid tribute to the legendary singer as they made the songs their own. This demonstrates great talent along with a high degree of artistic integrity which was well appreciated by those who attended the show.

These performers were Mallorie Fletcher, Katie Rochon, David B. Johnson, and Patrick McLaughlin*. Their interpretations of the songs they delivered met the skills of Sinatra to the point of occasionally surpassing them. It’s been said a good musical accompaniment enhances a singer’s work. This was very evident in this presentation as the musicians were of a very high caliber. They were Beth Faulstick* on percussions and Ronan Mariano* on piano who also served as the presentation’s Musical Director.

Corin Hollifield Directed and Choreographed the show the Stage Manager was Rob DelColle. Jenavene Hester was the Assistant Stage Manager and Props Mistress while Anthony Calderone was the Technical Director with Tucker Haworth serving as the Assistant Technical Director. The Set/Lighting Designer and Master Carpenter was Sean Warner while the Costumer was Katy Joyce with Ashley Nieves as the Assistant Costumer. The Shawnee Playhouse staff consists of Producers Ginny and Charlie Kirkwood, Executive Director, Midge McClosky*, Group Sales Manager Mary Horn, Box Office Staffers Kasey Meski, Lillian Gonzales, and Barbara Toss, Sound designer Bill Ulichney, Assistant Carpenter Joe Warner, Publicist Amy Cramer*, and Webmaster David Schrage.

This presentation of “My Way: A tribute to Frank Sinatra” will continue its run at The Shawnee Playhouse* in Shawnee on the Delaware, PA until July 13th and is recommended for those who would like to revive their memories of ol’ blue eyes through the new eyes of four talented performers. The next Shawnee Playhouse* in Shawnee on the Delaware, PA presentations will be “Fame: The Musical” to be performed June 20th - August 9th and “Nunsense” to be performed June 20th 0 August 9th.
