Poem: February Light by Barbara Crooker

In February,
when the light begins to change,
sullen onions sprout in corners,
send blind shoots in search of sky;
crocus sink their teeth
through the skin of perennial borders;
tulip bulbs split and crack,
yearning for sun;
and reluctant houseplants
break out in flowers,
unwilling in this slow change,
this tired turning
into February,
when the light
begins to bloom.
