A Gazebo Finale

The Presbyterian Church of the Mountain in Delaware Water Gap, PA presented Bonnie Childs and the Church of the Mt Band on Sunday August 29th as the Grand Finale of their Summer Gazebo Concert Series. Although there were some technical glitches significantly effecting the sound system, the performance proved to be a fitting end to the seasonal musical treats. The show was filled with familiar songs from the 60s, 70s, and 80’ which led many to sing along while clapping their hands.

The warm summer temperatures were reflected in the congenial style of the musicians which withheld any thought of the upcoming Autumnal change that is will occur in a few weeks. Yet, there was a bittersweet quality to the concert as the audience realized the time has come to bid both the series and the season a fond adieu. You’ll find more Photographs in The Forwardian Arts Society PCOM Gazebo Concerts 2010 Gallery at www.myspace.com/forwardian_arts.

Words Surrounding Thoughts

The Forwardian Arts Society held their monthly Literary Lovers’ Gathering at The Cheeky Monkey Coffeehouse in Stroudsburg, PA on Thursday August 26th. There were a nice number of people who attended the which made the conversation very congenial and relaxed. Some of us shared a meal taken from the establishment’s menu which proved to be very satisfying. It reflected and complimented the company quite well.

The “Just Say It” Spoken Word Symposium began soon afterwards and the Gathering‘s mood seemed to have spilled over to this event. There were some poems read but the majority of the meeting was spent chatting about a number of different things. These things ranged from politics to child rearing to lovers to traffic jams. Yet, there was a sense that all these topics are poetic in nature since they all deal with the realities we find in our lives. Perhaps when we realize things and give ourselves the time to reflect upon them is what arts is rally all about. Hmmmmmm

The Gentlemen from Dixie

The Presbyterian Church of the Mountain in Delaware Water Gap, PA presented The Dixie Gents on Sunday August 22nd as part of their Summer Gazebo Concert Series. Due to the rainy weather conditions, the concert was held inside the church’s sanctuary but this change of venue did nothing to inhibit the free wheeling style and outrageous performance of these fun loving musicians. Although it was noted there were little if any rehearsal between them prior to the concert, their mastery of the instruments they played brought a great deal of joy to those who were fortunate enough to hear them.

After a brief introduction given by Presbyterian Church of the Mountain’s George Munn, The Dixie Gents began to play their brand of Jazz reminiscent of the styles associated with the clubs found in New Orleans and other southern locals. The Dixie Gents consists of Bob Leive on Trumpet, Rich Chamberlain on Trombone, Nelson Hill on Soprano Sax, Ray Schweisgath on Banjo, and Jim Daniels on Tuba.

It wasn’t long until their free for all style led to heads swaying, toe tapping, and hands clapping. What a ruckus they made. It was really a very fun night for some great music. You’ll find more Photographs in The Forwardian Arts Society PCOM Gazebo Concerts 2010 Gallery at www.myspace.com/forwardian_arts.

The Maddening Dead

The Antoine Dutot Gallery and Museum in Delaware, PA held an Artists’ Reception on Friday August 20th featuring the photographic works of Don Manza and Sherwood Samet. The contrasting styles and subjects of two photographers complimented each other and created an atmosphere leading those who attended the reception into two very different worlds. Mr. Manza’s Black and White work titled, “House The Dead in Stone” depicting numerous grave sites found in Mexico led us to a fascinating visitation to the homes of the deceased while Mr. Samet’s “Away from the Maddening Crowd” displayed images of colorful vibrancy found in numerous natural settings where one might like to travel to in order to escape from all that entraps their attentions.

While the subject matter of the two photographic works were very different from one another, there seemed to be a certain similarity between them. It is part of the human condition to occasionally (sometimes permanently) leave the surroundings we find ourselves in so we can find a rejuvenating rest from it all. Death seems to be an extreme goal to strive for, but it is (after all) an ultimate restful state of being (or non being depending on your point of view). Many of the gravesites depicted were adorned as homes for the deceased who dwell within them while the colorful natural settings depicted provided another type of home. It is a home where humanity can return to so it can re-experience the more simplistic life abandoned by societal responsibilities. Both collections depicts places where we can rest in peace.

The reception was well attended with the assortment of food and conversation very satisfying to the culinary and intellectual pallet. The Exhibition continues until September 5th. You’ll find more photographs taken during the reception in The Forwardian Arts Society Dutot 2010 Gallery at www.myspace.com/forwardian_arts.

The next Artists’ Reception will feature a variety of works for their annual “Music Motif” Exhibition beginning at 6pm on Friday September 10th as part of The 33rd Annual Celebration of The Arts (COTA) Festival taking place September 10th - 12th. This Exhibition will continue until September 19th. Jazz Standards at the PCOM

The Presbyterian Church of the Mountain in Delaware Water Gap, PA present The Kenny Jones Quartet on Sunday August 15th as part of their Summer Gazebo Concert Series. However, due to the rainy weather conditions, the concert was held within the Church’s Sanctuary which made it an even more intimate experience. The combination of the music, the building’s acoustics, the culinary treats, and the cool breeze generated around the rooms by the plentiful fans made it a very delightful place to be on a rainy night.

The Kenny Jones Quartet met during an Jazz Jam hosted by Jesse Green at The Big A Grillehouse in Marshall's Creek, PA. The Group consists of Kenny Jones on Alto Sax, Bob Victory on Guitar, Bjarni Nermoe on Upright Bass, and Skip Detrick on Drums. The music was an entertaining mix of jazz standards including those written by such greats as Thelonious Monk and Herbie Hancock. Yet, the quartet of musicians played the pieces as if they were written by them. You’ll find more Photographs in The Forwardian Arts Society PCOM Gazebo Concerts 2010 Gallery at www.myspace.com/forwardian_arts.

A Night of Classic Caroll-ing

The ArtMusic Coffeehouse in East Stroudsburg, PA presented Classical Guitarist Craig Carroll on Saturday August 14th. The Concert took place at the home of Don Slepian and his wife Jan Julia whose coupled charm immediately greets those who enters their welcoming dwelling. Their home is truly a faithful reflection of their generosity and warmth which is evident in those the concerts attracts. This is enhanced by the conversation and the wonderful foods that are consumed before and after the musical treats of the evening are partook of.

This evening proved no exception to the delightful presentation of meaningful music The ArtMusic Coffeehouse has gained a well deserved reputation of having. After the customary musical introduction by host Don Slepian, Classical Guitarist Craig Carroll presented pieces by well know Classical Composers but focused on works not commonly known. In fact, many of these pieces aren’t known by music teachers as it is often assumed the work most associated with the composer is his only composition. It was a delight to listen to the lesser know works as it gave a new insight to the composer’s creative process and makes listening to the more known work even more enjoyable. You’ll find more Photographs in The Forwardian Arts Society ArtMusic Coffeehouse Series 2010 Gallery at www.myspace.com/forwardian_arts.

The Next The ArtMusic Coffeehouse Concert will feature acoustic guitarist Bob Marshall on Saturday September 4th beginning at 8pm. The Eastburg Community Alliance held their Crystal Street Cruiser Night on Saturday August 14th all along the Crystal Street area of the town of East Stroudsburg, PA featuring a display of Classic Cars compliments of The Monroe County Cruisers Car Club. Many came out to see the vintage automobiles and marvel at their sleek designs and functional abilities. It was obvious to all how much the owners loved their cars when the evidence of their care became apparent.

Many of the local businesses supported the event by making their merchandise and services available to those who passed by. These included “Memories” which is a store filled with Antiques, Collectables, and Needful Things and the new “Sugar, Sugar” Candy Store filled with all the goodies my Doctor says I’m not allowed to eat. Thank goodness for health care reform so I can get a different doctor. Tee hee. Selving and Spezzano at the Community

The Pocono Community Theater in East Stroudsburg, PA held two Artists’ Receptions on Saturday August 14th in their new front and hallway galleries. The event featured the works of Jan Selving in an exhibit titled, "Torn and Frayed” and Richard Spezzano in an exhibit titled, "Color My World." A sizable gathering attended the reception which enhanced the enjoyable conversation, art, and culinary treats that were very satisfying.

Ms. Selving’s work consisted of colorful pieces of paper pasted together to create some interesting looking animals and other objects framed in such a way that it gave each image a third dimensional quality. This quality enhanced the seemingly simplistic approach she takes to her subjects adding a certain depth drawing the viewer deeper into the work as they take special note of the shadows they cast. Her work can be seen throughout the front lobby of the theater.

Mr. Spezzano’s photographic work illuminated the eye with their vibrant colors depicting the familiar scenes from the Pocono Area and beyond in such a way the viewer finds him/herself visiting it for the very first time. In fact, many of the images in the pieces were arranged in such a way they didn’t merely represent the objects and their locations, but transcended them through their unconventional placement within the frame. This allowed one to see what they always see in a new way. His work can be seen along the walls leading to the second and third screening rooms The Pocono Community Theater offers its patrons.

The Exhibitions continue until September 26th and both are well worth taking some time to explore while awaiting the start of a film. Each contrasted nicely with the other in regards to their artistic approach and subject matter. You’ll find more Photographs in The Forwardian Arts Society Pocono Community Theater 2010 Gallery at www.myspace.com/forwardian_arts.

In addition to the current exhibition, the Theater is best know for its presentation of independent and foreign films not commonly shown in larger theater complexes while serving the cultural needs of the community Their future events include The Forwardian Arts Society Film Lovers’ Gathering on Friday September 3rd beginning at 4pm and a special 25th Anniversary Screening of the film ” Day of the Dead” directed by George A. An August Meeting for Artists

The PoconoArts Council held a Town Hall Meeting for Artists and Art Related Groups on Wednesday August 11th at their Cultural Center located in Stroudsburg, PA The hot summer day gave way to some very cool avenues of discussion of all topics relating to the arts. Two COTA Meetings Left

The Celebration of the Arts (COTA) held their bi monthly meeting on Tuesday August 10th at The Deer Head in Delaware Water Gap, PA for those who would like to help plan their 33rd Annual Festival. The meeting was informative as the board of directors shared how the festival is progressing thus far with those who attended. One of the main topics was an exploration of the changing financial needs of the media who has covered the festival in the past and how COTA can adapt to such changes. These new approaches may include inviting other nontraditional media outlets such as Internet Broadcasters to cover the festival.

Besides receiving information on what is happening with the festival, many came to become reacquainted with friends they have made over the years. The meetings also serve as opportunities to meet new people the COTA spirit attracts and add them to the long list of friends. It was good for me to see some of the people whom I’ve come to call my closest of friends as well as those who came to the meetings for the very first time as we shared the love we have for the festival and the arts it supports. You’ll find more photographs in The Forwardian Arts Society COTA Meetings 2010 Gallery at www.myspace.com/forwardian_arts.

A Gazebo Full of Jazzy Friends

The Presbyterian Church of the Mountain (PCOM) in Delaware Water Gap, PA presented Jay Rattman and Friends on Sunday August 8th as part of their Summer Gazebo Concert Series. The warm summer day provided a fitting atmosphere in which the cool jazz created by this quartet could sooth the minds and enliven the soul of all who listened in. The large crowd that gathered sat back and enjoyed the relaxing effects of the music.

The quartet consisted of Jay Rattman on Alto Saxophone, Spencer Reed on Electric Jazz Guitar, Bobby Avey on Keyboards, and Evan Gregor on Upright Bass. After an introduction made by Bonnie Childs of The PCOM and a technical difficulty relating to the absence of a much needed cable was resolved, the friends began to play a wonderful assortment of original work alongside some jazz standards. A great many heads throughout the audience could be seen swaying back and forth leading some to begin to doze as the effects of the soft and gentle tunes led many to a dreamlike countenance. What a wonderful way to spend an afternoon. You’ll find more photographs in The Forwardian Arts Society PCOM Gazebo Concerts 2010 Gallery at www.myspace.com/forwardian_arts.

There was Dancin’, and Skelly, and groovin’ to the Music

The Main Street Jukebox in Stroudsburg, PA held an Artist Reception featuring The Art of Skellatrona along with some works created by Tim Nebet on Saturday August 7th. A large crowd of art lovers gathered to partake of the work and each other’s company. The design and images of the two dimensional pieces were quite impressive but it was the three dimensional sculpted pieces that really dominated the show and the attendee’s interests. These particular pieces were aptly titled demonstrating a creative sense of humor bringing a slightly macabre smile to the face of anyone who got the joke.

Music for the evening was provided by Meshach Richards and Liz Mason of their newly formed Bang Snap Heart Attack. They presented a great deal of original material seasoned with a touch of cover tunes which they made their own through their out standing performance. Meshach and Liz had developed their own distinctive styles and approaches to music during their solo career prior to coming together to form Bang Snap Heart Attack.

This was evident when Meshach took the mike to demonstrate his kick ass talent of grabbing the audience’s attention with his voice and making them grasp for air as they asked for more of the same while Liz’s gentle voice whispered into the soul and heart of all who hear her. Together, their voices and styles combined as a communiqué for all levels of existence in which good, fun music can be enjoyed. You’ll find more photographs taken during the reception in The Forwardian Arts Society Main St. Jukebox 2010 Gallery at www.myspace.com/forwardian_arts.

An Inceptional Film for an August Gathering

Inception: Originated in 15th century Middle English as incepcion from Latin inception-, inceptio, from incipere to begin, from in- plus capere to take. Definition: an act, process, or instance of beginning (Commencement). Synonym - origin.

The Forwardian Arts Society held its monthly Film Lovers’ (aka Film and Chat) Gathering at The Pocono Community Theater in East Stroudsburg, PA on Friday August 6th to share the viewing of the film “Inception” and to chat about it in the theater’s café afterwards. A small number of film lovers attended the event which made the conversation more intimate providing everyone an opportunity to share their thoughts on the film in a very relaxed atmosphere.

The film, “Inception” was written, produced, and directed by Christopher Nolan and featured performances by Leonardo DiCaprio, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Ellen Page, Tom Hardy, Marion Cotillard, Ken Watanabe and Cillian Murphy. The film is said to be a variant on the heist genre in which the thieves enters the dreams of their targets in order to extract information allowing them access to the object or information they desire.

Before watching the film, I read one review that said “Inception” was a typical Summer Blockbuster that was atypical in that it worked on an intellectual level as well. After seeing the film, I can say this observation was exactly on the mark. It had all the action one would expect from a “Summer Blockbuster” which made it exciting to watch but it also had a depth to it that made it very intere4sting to reflect upon afterwards. This aspect of the film was quite evident during the discussion following its screening among those who attended the gathering.

Although I found the action of the film quite exciting, there were some who felt violence was a distraction taking away the film’s potential as an exploration into the world of dreams. The film presented a number of body guards and hit men sporting an array of guns and other munitions. They were said to be projections of the thieves’ quarry’s subconscious. One participant noted the projections of her subconscious aren’t hit men carrying guns. “They are family members with much more devastating weapons at their disposal.”

While watching the film, I could not help but to compare it to the “Matrix” films especially as one of the characters (played by Michael Caine) was referred to as an Architect which was the originator of the program in which the human denizens of Earth was incepted with so their dreams would be made real for them. I began to imagine “Inception” could serve as a prequel to the “Matrix” films exploring where the technology came from. Of course, this may just be my imagination going beyond the filmmaker’s vision but this is exactly what a good film inspires its audience to do.

Another point made during the gathering’s discussion was the dreams in film were too linier. It was felt a more pronounced usage of dream logic would have made the film even more interesting. I agree but I also understand why the producers opted to focus on the action aspects and downplay the metaphysical elements of the film. Money.

The film might have received even more critical praise, inspire more reflective conversation, and influence more film makers if it explores the very nature of dreams more fully. However, it would not be as commercially successful as it currently is. At least, this is what the perception of many studios and producers have. So, the film can be considered a compromise in this respect. But, it still is a very good film.

“Inception” is rated PG-13 and is being shown at The Pocono Community Theater in East Stroudsburg, PA. The Theater presents independent and foreign films not commonly shown in larger theater complexes. Most films run one week but some films may be held over for an additional week or two depending on ticket sales. The Theater also presents film and non film related events serving the cultural needs of the community including two Artists’ Receptions taking place on Saturday August 14th beginning at 1pm titled, "Torn and Frayed" and "Color My World". The Exhibitions continue until September 26th. Please Explore The Pocono Community Theater Website at www.poconocommunitytheater.org or call 570-421-3456 for more information about their films, the exhibitions, and all they have to offer.

Our next Film Lovers’ (aka Film and Chat) Gathering will be Friday September 3rd beginning around 4pm which will include sharing in a viewing of a selected film followed by a discussion afterwards in the theater’s café. A free beverage will be provided to those wishing to participate in the discussion. All film lovers are welcomed to join us to watch a film and participate in an enjoyable conversation. You’ll find more photographs taken during the discussion of the film “Inception” on Friday August 6th in The Forwardian Arts Society Film and Chat Gathering 2010 Gallery at www.myspace.com/forwardian_arts.

Musicians, and Singers, and Artists. Oh My.

A multitude of Music and Art Lovers converged upon the little town of Milford, PA who held their Annual Music Festival from Friday July 30th until Sunday August 1st. The weekend included two festivals in conjunction with the main festival. They were The Sidewalk Shopping Festival which (like the main festival) occurred throughout the town and “Javapalooza” with musical performances centered at 7th Street Coffee located on Broad St. at the edge of Milford. I only was able to attend Saturday’s events but I was still pleasantly overwhelmed by the variety and quality of music and art I encountered during my relatively short visit.

There was music everywhere. One only had to take a few steps from business establishment to business establishment to discover a new band or soloist performing. Yet, one could appreciate the thought processes that must have taken place in the event’s planning as the performances were spaced out at just the right distances preventing one to drown out another. This allowed each attendee to enjoy the band without any unwanted distraction.

These venues and bands included Teri Dixon performing at The Tom Quick Inn, Eric Langberg and Bluestone performing at Fretta’s Italian Specialties, 90 Proof performing at Davis Chant Reality, White Light performing at The Harrington House, Sarah Morr performing at The Craft Show, and Mega Savant performing at 7th Street Coffee. The town also held a block party at Jorgensen’s which is located at the Dimmick Inn featuring a variety of bands, food, and games in a carnival like setting which enhanced the enjoyment of the entire festival. There were many more musicians performing at many more venues, but the ones I mentioned were the ones I got to personally see. If only I could get funding to bid on one of those cloning experiment kits I saw on Ebay.

There were also many artists and artisans showing their work during the festival. They included The Bluestone Gallery which is presently featuring the work of Joyce Ellen Weinstein in an exhibition titled, “Uncommon Figuration” which continues until September 26th. There were other works on display in this elegant gallery filled with specially selected pieces by its co owners Dave Greenbaum and Robert Levine have chosen whose artistic taste is beyond impressive. This and other Milford galleries like The Golden Dragon and The Artery never fail to provide me with an artistic home away from home which is in Stroudsburg, PA. You’ll find more photographs I took during my day at the festival in The Forwardian Arts Society Milford Music Festival 2010 Gallery at www.myspace.com/forwardian_arts.

The Milford Music Festival 2010 was presented by The Milford Business Council and The Pike County Chamber of Commerce. The festival takes place every year and offers musical performances by over 20 bands and soloists over a three day period. The concerts are free to the public and rely upon financial support from a variety of sources in order to continue.
